Jaume Capdevila i Herrero, Kap, was born in Berga in 1974 and is a great Catalan cartoonist and caricaturist. He currently publishes his cartoons in the newspapers La Vanguardia and El Mundo Deportivo, in Catalan magazines such as El Triangle and El Web Negre and in foreign journals such as Courrier International, Siné Mensuel, Siné Hebdo, La Méche and Zélium (all French) and L’Antitempo (Italian), among others. He also publishes in the USA through Daryl Cagle’s Political Cartoonists Index, he has drawn live on TV shows such as Els Matins on TV3 and is a member of the board of directors of the Quevedo Institute of Humour of the General Foundation of the University of Alcalà. He is considered one of the most important specialists in Catalonia in terms of humorous sketches and the satirical press. He is also president of Cartoonists without Borders and a member of the international association of humorous cartoonists sponsored by UN Cartooning for Peace (LiberPress Associations Award 2013). In 2009, he was awarded the Gat Perich International Humour Prize, and in 2015, the Notary Award for Humour at the University of Alicante.
In February 2016, he won both the first and third prizes at one of the most prestigious European events in the world of graphic humour, Press Cartoon Europe. He has published many works featuring his caricatures, among which we can highlight Sense Kap ni peus: ninots i acudits (1997), Manar! Manar!: com s’ho munten per mantenir-se a la poltrona (2009), Som i serem: postals de la Catalunya independent (2013), Pujol i fa sol. Històries de Pujolàndia (2014) and Kap: 15 anys gegants (2015), and many others with collectives, such as Any d’estelades (2012), Fins als borbons! (2013) and Any de consulta (2014).
He is a scholar and expert in graphic humour from today and, above all, from the past; he also has many works dedicated to other masters, missing publications and hot topics, such as Muntañola: l’art de viure, l’art de riure (2007), Bagaria. La guerra no fa riure: caricatures antifeixistes a La Vanguardia (1936-1938) (2007), L’humor gràfic de Tísner (2009), Si los curas y frailes supieran: antología de caricatura anticlerical (2010), Andreu Dameson: geni de la caricatura (2011), El Gran Vázquez. Todo por la pasta (2011), L’Esquella de la Torratxa 1879-1939. 60 anys d’història catalana (2013), Cu-cut! Sàtira política en temps trasbalsats (1902-1912) (2012), La Campana de Gràcia (1870-1934). La primera publicació catalana de gran abast (2013), Papitu (1908-1937) Sàtira, erotisme i provocació (2014) and Perich (2015), with Raquel Perich. He has had exhibitions in Barcelona, Paris, Granada, Madrid and Mexico, among other places. His work is commonly found on international graphic humour circuits, and he won the Humoris Causa Award at the Biennale Internazionale di Humor Grafico Vino, Humore e Fantasia (Italy), and mentions at the Festival Internazionale di Humor Grafico (Italy), at Press Cartoon Europe (Belgium) and at World Press Cartoon.
Jaume Capdevila i Herrero, Kap, received the 2017 LiberPress Award for a vast body of work, without borders, provocative, forceful, wise, profound and full of intelligent, refined, satirical humour. Also, because he is a simple, good, republican, an essential and amusing person, a theoretical and practical genius of graphic humour and caricature, who has always fought for peoples and their freedoms, especially for freedom of expression, and is an unconditional friend of LiberPress.
