The Nunca Máis (Never Again) platform was set up in Galicia in early 2003, a few days after the Prestige oil tanker sank off the region’s coast and caused a massive oil spill. The organisation united the citizens’ response to the ecological disaster with the way the various administrations responsible handled the event.
Through multiple actions and demonstrations of different kinds, Nunca Máis demanded that Galicia be declared a disaster zone and with it the immediate provision of resources of all kinds to remedy the serious economic, social, environmental and health consequences caused by the accident. It also demanded the establishment of mechanisms to prevent such a disaster from being repeated in the future.
