José María González Castillo, better known as Chumy Chúmez (born San Sebastián, May 8, 1927 – died Madrid, April 10, 2003), was a Basque graphic humourist, writer and film director.

Born in San Sebastián, he trained as a professor of commerce, and then went on to study drawing and painting. His passion for painting led him to move to Madrid, where he devoted himself to humour, at first sporadically in newspapers and later on a regular basis in the weekly magazines La Codorniz and Triumfo and the newspaper Madrid, where he usually appeared on the third page, until it was suspended by government order in 1971.

During the Spanish transition to democracy, he contributed to the weekly humour magazine Hermano Lobo, of which he was a founder. In the 1960s he filmed several documentaries, mostly on localities in Andalusia. He also collaborated with scriptwriters on the writing of film scripts and wrote some of his own. He also directed several films, including Dios bendiga cada rincón de esta casa (1977) and ¿Pero no vas a cambiar nunca, Margarita? (1978), produced by Manuel Summers.

He was a guest on the radio discussion shows (Protagonistas and Las Mañanas de Radio 1) and on TV (Este país necesita un repaso).In his facet as an author, of particular note is his Yo fui feliz en la guerra (1986), an autobiography covering his memories of the Spanish Civil War. His other works include Por fin un hombre honrado (1994) and Pase usted sin llamar (1995). He was also a renowned lecturer and columnist.

Throughout his life he received many awards, including the Tañana Agromán Prize (1977), the Mingote Prize (1985), the Francisco Cerecedo Journalism Prize (1991) and the Quevedos Ibero-American Prize for Graphic Humour (2002). He died on April 10, 2003. Some of his ashes stayed in Spain, while the rest were scattered in Cascais.
