LIBERPRESS LITERATURE AWARD 2019

Nuccio Ordine was born in Diamante, Calabria, on July 18, 1958. He is a professor, philosopher, writer and one of the top experts on the Renaissance and the philosophy of Giordano Bruno. He completed his Doctorate in Italian Literature and is a Professor at the University of Calabria, in Cosenza (Italy). He is a fellow at Harvard University Center for Studies of the Italian Renaissance and at the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, and has been invited by various American universities (Yale, New York…), and European universities (Paris IV-Sorbona, Paris III-Sorbona Nouvelle, CESR of Tours, Academic Institute of France, Paris VIII, Warburg Institute…). He has given many conferences and has lectured at the best universities in the world, has written a countless number of articles and has received multiple awards and honors, among them, becoming an honoris causa professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, the University of Valparaíso (Chile), the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre and the University of Caxias do Sul (2017), “for his invaluable contributions to studies in the humanities field”. He is also an honorary member of the Institute of Philosophy at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He has been named Commander of the Ordine al Merito della Reppublica Italiana, Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor and Commandeur of l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques, among others. He has received over twenty awards: Cesare de Lollis, Syracuse Philosophy, Marco Alberto Ippolito International Awards, and others.

His books have been translated into various languages. He is the director of a new edition of the works of Giordano Bruno for the Parisian publishing house Les Belles Lettres. In Italy, he is the director of the collections “Sileni” (Liguori, Naples), “Classici del Pensiero Europeo” (Nino Aragno, Turin) and “Classici della Letteratura Europea” (Bompiani, Milan). He is a writer for the Corriere della Sera. Among his numerous brilliant works are The Threshold of Shadow (original: La soglia dell’ombra); La cabala dell’asino; Giordano Bruno, Ronsard and Religion; Three Crowns for a King; Los retratos de García Márquez: La repetición y la diferencia; and the wonderful The Usefulness of the Useless.
