LiberPress was founded in Girona in 1999. It was set up with the idea of disseminating and promoting what we could call the “culture of solidarity”. The idea of the awards was to create a solidarity and humanitarian movement and to involve the media through a conference with three main objectives. The first is related to the role of the media in society, given their importance and the impact they have on public opinion (their independence, their involvement in solidarity movements and their influence on awareness of this most solidary aspect of culture). The second focuses particularly on journalists with the aim of highlighting their independent, democratic and solidary work. The third concentrates on projects designed to expand financial and media support.
LiberPress is a non-governmental, humanitarian, non-profit association. Its objectives include organising talks, conferences, debates, forums, exhibitions, workshops, roundtables, performances and any other event of a cultural nature or for the assertion of demands to promote a culture of solidarity based on respect for human rights in the whole world. In 1999 and 2000, LiberPress worked to publicise and promote the humanitarian activity of the Humanitarian Solidarity Association (AHS), which consisted of undertaking medical and surgical missions in Moundou (Chad) for Handicap Santé, set up by father Michel Guimbaud.
In the present and in the future, LiberPress works and will work to collaborate on the execution of projects carried out by other humanitarian associations, and to promote its own projects. LiberPress aims to be a forum for both media professionals and the public that receives information from the mainstream media, in order to promote greater independence, truthfulness and honesty among professionals and a greater sense of criticism among the public who receive the information, as well as to provide a greater humanitarian and solidarity content to all areas of communication, from the written press to the internet.
