LiberPress Awards 2004

The awards, organized by the LiberPress Association, aim to open a space for debate on the role of the media in society, and to reward the world-wide personalities, especially journalists, who have Outstanding for its independent, democratic and solidarity work.

The rights of the child

Júlia Tébar

Born in Barcelona. She has been working as a lawyer since 1992. Specialist in Civil Law and Intellectual Property. She has taken part in the literacy project for children and adults in Estelí (Nicaragua). She has also worked with the LiberPress Association.

 

Magda Bandera

She was born and lives in Vilanova i la Geltrú. She holds a degree in journalism from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She is a freelance journalist and has worked mainly for La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya. She is the author of the books 39 veces la primera vez (1999), El síndrome de Estocolmo (1999), Haciendo aguas (2000), 33 tristes traumas (2001), Hijos de la guerra and Turbadísimos (2002). She is also the co-author of other books, including No a la guerra, Que la vida iba en serio and Las manos muertas and wrote the prologue to Los diarios de Bagdad, by Nuria Al-Radi. She has visited refugee camps in Iraq.

 

Esperanza de Baldó

Volunteer and President of UNICEF in Girona. She studied law in Barcelona. She works for UNICEF and has travelled to different countries for the organisation, including Bolivia, where she went to Cochabamba and Potosí as part of the PROANDES Programme, and Tunisia. She has represented UNICEF at various conferences in Universities, Symposiums and Congresses, and trains volunteers. She also headed the UNICEF delegation at the Universal Forum of Cultures in Barcelona.

Terrorism and human rights

Fernando Reinares

Advisor on anti-terrorist policy to the Ministry for Home Affairs. Professor of Political Science at the Rey Juan Carlos University. Academic Director of the Documentation and Analysis Unit for Terrorism. Member of the United Nations Terrorism Prevention Branch experts group and the editorial board of Terrorism and Political Violence and  Cultures et Conflits. Member of the Advisory Council of the Queen Sofía Center for the Study of Violence and the European Science Foundation’s Standing Committee for the Social Sciences. He is the author of various articles and books, including: Terrorismo y antiterrorismo (1998), Patriotas de la muerte: quiénes han militado en ETA y por qué (2001) and Terrorismo global (2003).

 

José Maria Pérez Collados

Lecturer in Law at the University of Zaragoza (1995-99) and the UAB (since 1999). He has been Professor of the History of Law in the Faculty of Law, Girona, since 2003 and Dean of the Faculty of Law since 2004. He has been a guest lecturer and associate at numerous universities, teaching doctorate courses in many countries (Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Great Britain). He is a member of the Asociación Española de Americanistas and the International Institute of History of Indiano Law. He has published books on the History of Law, written numerous articles and given many lectures.

 

Josep María Prat i Sàbat

He holds a degree in Law from the University of Barcelona and has been working as a lawyer in Girona since 1973. Dean of the Il·lustre Col·legi d’Advocats de Girona since 1995 and a member of the Consell de Col·legis d’Advocats de Catalunya. He is Vice-President of the Consejo de la Abogacía Human Rights Commission and has travelled to various countries including Bolivia and Algeria on behalf of the organisation.

Women, work and human rights

Maria Àngels Freixenet

She holds a diploma in Business Science and a degree in Economic Science from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She teaches in a secondary school. Deputy Mayor for Finance and Economic Promotion in Girona City Council. She is a member of Col·lectiu per a la Igualtat.

 

Glòria Poyatos

A lawyer specialising in Labour Law, she has worked in Comissions Obreres since 1992. She teaches Labour Law at the ICAG Escola de Pràctica Jurídica and contributes to training courses for Legal Secretaries. Speaker at various conferences on mobbing, discrimination against women in employment and sexual harassment. She is a specialist on mobbing. She has published various books and articles on labour issues and has presented numerous papers at conferences and congresses.
